Review: Green Mountain Fair Trade Coffees

September 8th, 2011

breakfast time!

You all know I was a HUGE Tassimo fan, right? I loved the Tassimo. I could write sonnets to the Tassimo.  Well guess what?  As of March of this year, Starbucks no longer makes t-discs for the Tassimo.  I hate to admit it but I think those Starbucks t-discs are the real reason I loved the Tassimo so much. Sure, the Tassimo machine had sleek lines and it was small and fit on my counter nicely but without those frothy latte primos it wasn’t that special.  The Gevalia coffee they sent me was awful and sometimes the cream capsules leaked. Not very often but sometimes.

It’s true, I was beginning to fall out of love with the Tassimo. Sigh.
But that’s not the end of the story of course.
There’s a new girl in town who is now married to Starbucks: Keurig.  They don’t have Starbucks K-Cup Portion Packs out yet but I’ve googled it and they are due to come out in the fall of this year.  So you know what I was thinking: Goodbye Tassimo, Hello Keurig!  I’m not that loyal. Except I don’t really have the money to be buying expensive coffee machines.  So I bummed it for a while with my trusty French press and thought about getting a Keurig.

Then I got lucky. Maybe being the self-proclaimed coffee expert had something to do with it but probably not.
Green Mountain Coffee asked me to review their Fair Trade coffees and they offered to send me a free Keurig coffee machine. Score!  Sign me up, I said, knowing next to nothing about Fair Trade coffee.
So I did my research.  And I sampled the Fair Trade Green Mountain Coffee.
adding cream
Lots and lots of sampling. (It’s a dirty job but some-very-caffeinated-body’s gotta do it.)
morning brew
And you know what?
extra bold
I wasn’t all that fond of the lighter blends (I never am. I like my coffee tall, dark and burnt.) but the Sumatran Reserve Extra Bold is pretty good! It doesn’t come with a capsule of frothy milk (and why not?!!) but it is pretty tasty coffee.  Slosh in some cream and sugar and I’m a happily caffeinated girl.
So if you are the type who enjoys using a single-serve coffee machine (Admit it, they are so handy and clean. No more coffee grounds all over!) this is good news!

Green Mountain Coffee is known for its award-winning coffees, innovative brewing technology and social responsibility. They offer a lot of fancy coffees on their website (and free samples too!) and several of them are Fair Trade Certified™ coffees:
Screen shot 2011-08-14 at 10.08.38 PM
That basically means that by buying these coffees your dollars are going to growers who meet a stringent set of requirements, including “democratic voting among members, fair labor practices, and the exclusion of using certain chemicals.

“Growers are guaranteed a minimum price for their coffee. If market prices exceed the minimum, they receive current market prices plus a per pound premium for community development and an additional premium for organic coffee. The co-op members vote to determine how to invest the Fair Trade premiums. They might fund community projects such as schools, health clinics, safe drinking water or new roads.”

Fair Trade means better quality coffee for you and a better a better quality of life for farmers. Fair trade Coffee is better quality for all.  You can learn more about the details of Green Mountain’s Fair Trade certification on their Facebook page and sign up for some free samples or coupons for your own taste test while you’re at it!

  1. Debbie F. Says:

Definitely dark roast. The darker the better, then I add cream and sugar. And I, too, am looking forward to trying the Starbucks k-cups!

  2. Brea Says:

Love my morning coffee!! It’s what gets me out of bed! :) I like it slightly strong with plenty of cream and stevia!

  3. Ruth Says:

Oh man. I used to like the dark roasts, but then I worked at Starbucks for a whopping six weeks last year (great place, terrible manager!) and I think my stomach lining might be permanently burned? Ha! Now I think I prefer the lighter roasts. But, no matter what, fair trade has always been really important to me! (There’s a great film that discusses this, called Invisible Childhood, that totally changed me!)

  4. bethany actually Says:

I like medium-to-dark blends. I used to like the light roasts, but then I started hanging out with someone who likes her coffee tall, dark and burnt and she trained me out of that. ;-)

  5. Natalie Says:

My hubby works for Starbucks…so I feel required to say my favorite is Starbucks :) But I do love their Christmas blend and Tribute blend!

  6. Caminante Says:

I love their Breakfast Blend. I have to be careful with what I drink because if it is too strong I get heartburn. They have a Keurig at my work but I would LOVE to have one at home. Yum!

  7. Donna G Says:

I like my coffee medium, I guess. It’s the HEB San Antonio blend with hints of cinnamon and chocolate. Or a latte. With Spenda.

  8. MonsterAteMy Says:

We had an earlier model of a single-serve coffee machine (Funky-looking, blue, might have been a Tassimo, not sure) that was really, really underwhelming. It seemed like a coffee maker for folks who didn’t like coffee, but perhaps enjoyed General Foods International instant coffee instead.
However, I’ve been hearing good things about Keurigs, and would definitely give single-serve coffee makers another shot. Both the husband and I really like dark coffee, and Starbucks is our brand of choice (though we did go on a Green Mountain kick a year or so ago –we just tend to get tired of the same thing and like to switch now and then).

  9. Jessica L. Says:

I’m always a pumpkin spice fan! There is just something so comfy about a good cup of pumpkin spice!

  10. Meighan Says:

I love, love, love the Breakfast Blend. I add pure cream or half and half with a touch of sugar. YUM!!

  11. Shannon Says:

I like dark roasts, but pretty much LOVE anything that Green Mountain does. Although, and I think that I am in the minority with this, I dislike almost any kind of flavored coffee. I just don’t get the appeal! Especially hazelnut. The smell of hazelnut coffee will put me off coffee for days!

  12. Susan Says:

Oh, I love good old dark, strong coffee (Starbucks whole bean, made at home preferred!). With cream and nothing else. Mmmm. When I’m feeling fancy I go to a coffee shop in town and get a Mexican latte, which is so good but is only once in a while or I’d be huge. My sister in law brought her Tassimo to the beach this year and was lamenting the loss of Starbucks for that machine. At the time I was jealous of her perfectly made, slightly frothy mugs of coffee. Now I really want a Keurig!

  13. christine Says:

dark, cream and sugar (or some chocolate syrup when I’m feeling the need)

  14. Meghan Says:

I’ve always been a fan of darker roast, but recently I’ve started adding milk & sugar. Perhaps my taste buds are demanding something more mellow now that I’ve reached 30!

  15. Erin Says:

Dark roast! I love my morning cup of coffee! I would love to win.

  16. Lorna Says:

I hate coffee, but my husband loves it. He definitely likes his dark.

  17. Meagan Says:

I used to love dark roast, but once I found out that light roasts have a higher caffeine content, I switched. I still love the taste of the dark roasts, but stick with light roasts to wake me up in the morning.
And, I love that Green Mountain offers fair trade coffees. All coffee companies should do that, in my opinion. Way to set a good example, Green Mountain!

  18. Yara Says:

I never liked my coffee too strong before. Then one day, you handed me a cup of coffee & it was heaven. You make the best coffee.
I’m currently liking my coffee in the form of a nice espresso with steamed milk & homemade syrup; either chocolate or pumpkin spice.

  19. StephanieL Says:

I like darker coffees too. Generally I prefer to cold brew, but we have a Keurig at work and it is amazing. Green Mountain has a lot of great flavors and new companies are making k-cups all the time. They do iced coffee now as well as hot chocolate and tea so its fun to get to try new stuff from them all the time.

  20. flyingbird Says:

Mmmm, coffee. I like a medium roast with a good bold flavor, and I drink it black.

  21. Leticia Says:

I love a medium roast, ive tried the breakfast blend and it’s great:D

  22. RockGal Says:

I like the lighter roasts, but then load it up with all the fixins’ (cream, sugar or flavored syrup, spices). The better half likes medium to dark roasts, so making individual cups would be a dream!

  23. Keri Says:

Any coffee! But it has to have some cream:)

  24. Cindy G Says:

Favorite coffee is French Vanilla with a little cinnamon.

  25. Laura K Says:

I am on the opposite end of the spectrum from you when it comes to coffee. I can’t handle the burnt taste of super strong coffee. Give me a good light flavor and I am a happy girl!

  26. alison Says:

I like my coffee light. Well, I like it dark but I don’t like the effects of it on my body, hello shaky hands in two hours! My parents have Keurig and I bee line for it every time I visit. I would love to have one!

  27. Momsy Says:

Thanks for the great contest. We are huge fans of Starbuck’s french roast. We currently use the french press and I love it black with a little bit of stevia. Yum!

We’d love to win the Keurig. I look at it every time I go to Costco, but I can never quite bring myself to shell out the big bucks! Fingers crossed.

I like coffee on the bolder side. The Sumatra blend is my favorite for the Keurig.

  31. Lauren P. Says:

I’m a Dunkin’ Donuts kinda gal. I’m not sure what they do to their coffee, but it’s liquid gold!

  32. heather d. Says:

I like my coffee white with lots of sugar. :)

  33. Jessie C. Says:

I like dark roast bean and my morning coffee with unsweetened soy milk

  34. Jessie C. Says:

  35. erin Says:

I love a nice dark roast, with a little soy milk. I also love cappuccinos. :)

  36. Jodi Blackman Says:

I love a dark roast. The darker the better.

  37. Jodi Blackman Says:

    I tweeted< but not sure I did this right!!/joderss

  38. Courtenay G Says:

Fair trade not only has higher standards when it comes to coffee, but working conditions, too. It’s a win win in my opinion.
We’ve been buying FT for years and will continue to do so.

    Great promotion and giveaway.

  39. Cristine Says:

    Love their breakfast blend!

  40. Amy Tong Says:

  42. Hannah Says:

My husband loves the dark roasts, and since I can just add cream and sugar, that’s what I go with as well. (I have to. We have no fancy one-cup machine, and we don’t have to brew two pots in the morning.) If I manage to score a medium roast somewhere else, I might actually drink it black. :)

  43. Hannah Says:

  44. Abigail Says:

I either like mild roast coffee with flavored coffeemate or Starbucks. What can I say, I’m a latte girl all the way.

  45. Lauren Elizabeth Says:

I like my coffee strong and sweet, with a bit of cream. Sometime I’m naughty and throw some nesquick into the cup. YUM!

  46. kim Says:

I LOVE a nice tall DARK roast of coffee and so does the hubs! are fav is the sumatrin reserve

  47. Stacy Says:

I’m in the minority here, but I love light roasts. I worked at Starbucks for almost 2 years and could never develop the taste for the dark roasts (ugh, especially Sumatra, Yukon and Pike’s Place).

  48. Danna Says:

I like my spoon to stand up straight in my coffee cup! Give me tall dark and tasty as well. My hubby likes it light and smooth. A Keurig would be perfect for our house!

I have tweeted and blogged this as well.!/dannastarr2002

  51. susie Says:

I like the Green Mountain Morning Blend for (duh) the morning, and the Sumatran for an afternoon pick-me-up. YUM. Also, Green Mountain has a new “Brew Over Ice” line that I LOVE LOVE LOVE! Iced coffee on demand. Love it!

I never win these, but I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed for this one! I’m a coffee fiend. I would really love to have a Keurig for my craft shop. Thanks for running this!

  52. Carol Says:

Being a Vermont girl I love GMCR… fav is Dark Magic. The name says it all! Add a little Vermont maple syrup & milk and I’m in heaven. Sadly, it’s not fair trade.

  53. Susan Smith Says:

I like light roasted with a hazelnut flavor.

  54. Susan Smith Says:!/susan1215/status/112604453777059840

  55. Tracy Says:

Pumpkin Spice all the way. It’s that time of year, so I’m stocking up now for the sad times of year when you can’t get pumpkin flavored anything.

  56. meredith Says:

i like dark roast coffee and pumpkin spice flavor!

I love my coffee with a bit of caramel and extra cream, but no sugar. : )

  59. Donna Barger Says:

I’m a wimp, I need my coffee very light, with lots of soy milk and sweetener. Flavored light coffees are even better. I’d have to say hazelnut is my fave right now.

  60. karen M Says:

  61. Daryl Says:

  62. Daryl Says:
    I just tweeted

  63. Carolyn G Says:

Dark roast is my favorite. I love strong coffee. I love Costa Rican coffee

  64. Erica Says:

The darker the coffee, the better for me! Splash in some almond milk and I’m set. Or if it’s fresh and has good flavor I’ll drink it black with a dash of sugar to savor the taste. We are a coffee snob family and would LOVE a Keurig coffee machine…it would be used non-stop around here since our 2nd coffee pot in 2 yrs. is dying a slow, painful death.

  65. Heidianna Says:

I prefer my coffee dark like you do… sometimes with cream, but definitely no sugar. I prefer unflavored varieties also. I like my coffee to taste like coffee. In our house, my dad and I are the only coffee drinkers, and he likes his coffee lighter, so I usually suffer through whatever he makes.

  66. Heidianna Says:!/heidianna/status/113016869501419520

  67. susana Says:

Medium, with lots of cream and sugar!

I am a medium blend kind of girl!

  70. Tami Lilac Says:

I loveloveLOVE the Green Mountain Dark Magic coffee. I really enjoy any extra bold coffees, but on the flip side, I love to load them up with more cream, sugar, and sometimes cocoa than seems scientifically possible. I guess that’s why I like the bold ones…. they’re the only ones that withstand my excessive additions!

  71. Martina Says:

I am skeptical that I could love a single-serve coffee machine, but I’m more than willing to try, especially if the coffee is dark and full-bodied and nice and hot!

  72. lyndsey Says:

i love pumpkin coffee. and viennese coffee with cinnamin.

  73. Kelly Massman Says:

I totally love my coffee doctored with lots of cream, other than that any kind will do!

thanks also for a chance to win!

  74. s Says:

I personally hate coffee, but my husband loves it and since we won’t shell out the $, he uses a little plastic thing-y to brew one cup. He says he likes it that way, but it would be super cool to have a one cup automated machine for sure – and hey maybe I could use it for cocoa or tea…

  75. Laura Major Says:

I am a Dark Coffee girl myself now, but only because it’s my husbands favorite. I always drank Medium Roast , but you know how it is when you get married…give and take! :)

  76. JenniferW Says:

Dark roast. Completely unadulterated. I don’t need anything between a delicious cup of coffee and myself. Unless it’s some kind of amazing French vanilla-ish deliciosity them bring it!

  77. Kerry Says:

I also like the dark roasts with some flavored creamer.

I love Chocolate Mint coffee- we usually buy whole bean and then grind it for a drip coffeemaker. I don’t like my coffee very strong, so no Starbucks for me!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

I like the dark roast coffee. I normally only drink coffee to get me going in the morning so I want the full benefits from my coffee and I love the dark roast taste. I only add a packet of sweetener and it’s ready to go! I can’t wait to try the Starbucks coffee!
