Bowly Bowl

October 19th, 2010

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kellogg.

As part of a share-your-story program for Kellogg’s Love Your Cereal, I’m writing a series of weekly posts about breakfast routines, nutrition and all the million-and-one reasons why we should love cereal!

This week’s topic is: Great things can come in small packages; what is your favorite meal in a bowl? – e.g., fruit, soup, cereal, etc.

rice in glass my favorite bowls

Oh bowly-bowl how I love thee. I like everything in a bowl! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert…it’s all good. I’m one of those people who likes my food to mix up when I eat it. I don’t care if my broccoli touches my mashed potatoes. Bring it on! In fact, if I can eat my salad first and then leave the salad dressing in the bowl to mix in later with my dinner, that’s even better! More flavor! Lasagna with a hint of balsamic dressing is delicious! I’ve liked those blended flavors so much it’s even inspired me to add a splash of balsamic vinegar to many of my main dishes when I’m cooking them.

But then again I know that could be just me. I know lots of people who don’t like mixing their foods up and will even go so far as to rinse off their forks between courses.

Anyway, we’re not talking about forks. We’re talking about bowls. Bowls bowls bowls. Why are bowls so great? Is it because they fit so nicely in your hand? Is it because they are a circle, and circles are just calming shapes? Tell me. I do not know! I just know I love them.

It sort of bothers me that I don’t have that many pictures of food in bowls. I take pictures of food all the time but as I’m sifting through my Flickr stream looking for photos to put in this post I’m not finding that many!

I love huge bowls of salad. Like HUGE bowls. I can’t eat a salad on a plate. It needs to be a bowl bigger than my head. Like Elaine said from Seinfeld, “I wanna LARGE salad.”

Tonight’s bowl will be full of beef stew. Last night the bowl was full of hearty chili. Before that it was my awesome macaroni & cheese.

Hmmmm….pretty much as long as it is in my super festive Fiestaware bowls, I like it….but right now, I’m thinking that a little Blue Bell Candy Jar Ice Cream would be delish. Tomorrow morning I will probably have oatmeal with frozen blueberries in my bowl! I love my Fiestaware!

I like to eat a great many things in a bowl, from cereal to rice dishes. My favorite food to eat in a bowl is beef stew. Occasionally I find bread bowls and can’t think of a better way to eat beef stew.

I eat practically everything in a bowl as I seem to exist on work days mostly on cereal or porridge with fruit, soups and strews. Today’s meals have consisted of Kelloggs bran flakes, strawberries and rhubarb yogurt for breakfast followed by chicken and vegetable soup for lunch and tonight supper will be beef stew (when I make it). All eaten out of white bowl with blue spots. Probably I’ll use a plain matt balck bowl for this evenings meal. Part of a set bought in a sale from Heals ( posh shop in London) bought to eat Chinese food.

I have a favorite bowl from childhood, once part of a set bought in the 70′s, now there is only one surviving piece, which I purloined form the family home and brought to London when I left to go to college. Its white and quite wide with an ornate and yellow sunflower at the bottom. I remember eating porridge from it as a small child and the aim was to eat it all up so slowly the flower would be revealed :)

I guess to answer the question properly my favorite thing to eat from a bowl is ice cream.

  23. Danielle Says:

I love to eat lots of things in bowl.. But ice cream wins for sure!

We like to eat lots of things in bowls…but tacos in a bowl is I think the most unusual. The sides of the bowl help to hold up the taco shells and keep all the deliciousness inside the shell.

Nothing beats a big bowl of my mom’s “Breakfast Rice”
Boil white rice with milk, half stick of butter or so and 1 cup sugar. Serve with cinnamon.
Perfect on a cold morning. It always reminds me of my childhood.
I still request my mom to make it when she comes to visit.

Favorite thing in a bowl, hands down has to be vanilla ice cream, bananas and Caramel or chocolate sauce! The bigger the bowl, the better!

  59. Gena Says:

Cake and ice cream!! Nothing gets away and they get all melty and crumby together.

  60. Margie Says:

I’m with you on bowls, especially the wide flat-ish kind intended for soup.

Favorite thing in a bowl? A big salad with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, sliced olives, sliced avocado, a sprinkle of feta and some home-made dressing. A few strips of leftover pork, beef, or even imitation seafood make it a meal!

  61. Tracy Robertson Says:

Mine is a rice bowl full of beef fried rice and orange chicken.

  62. Heather Says:

Has anyone said ice cream? ‘Cause that springs immediately to mind, unfortunately!
We do eat meals in bowls frequently, from cereal in the morning to various dishes over rice in the evening. Good stuff.

    Chili with cheese and onion

Well, I eat instant oatmeal in a bowl every day for breakfast, but my favorite is the beef stew that I make in the crock pot. I take that to winter get togethers and there aren’t usually any leftovers!

Hot buttered grits in a bowl with a touch of salt and pepper. Yumm!

  71. KarenG Says:

Mine would have to be ice cream! Oh wait, that isn’t really a meal in a bowl is it? (Ok, sometimes in my house it is, but don’t tell my kids that I sometimes do that!).

The true best meal in a bowl is Maryland Crab Soup, full of veggies but so good you forget it could be a healthy meal!

  72. The Redhead Riter Says:

I’m an old fan of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.

When I’m sick, it is always the first thing I want and in the middle of a dark night, I think of Corn Flakes.

    I’m hopelessly hooked forever.

  73. Ursula Says:

I love big bowls of pasta.

  74. Sarah L Says:

My favorite meal in a bowl is leftovers after a turkey dinner: dressing, gravy & turkey all mixed up in a bowl. Thanks for the contest.

  75. Sarah L Says:

  76. Erin T Says:

What DON’T I love in a bowl?? I even eat sushi in a bowl, because I am clumsy and it falls apart anyway, so by the end of the meal, it’s like I had Sushi Salad. My favorite bowls, though, are BREAD bowls that hold soup…and then you eat the bread after you’re done with your soup. It’s like the ultimate eco-friendly “disposable” flatware. :)

  77. shel Says:

Chili…I make mine with sliced carrots inside it and serve it with sliced rye bread and butter. I’m also a huge fan of cauliflower cheese soup..while I don’t like cauliflower, for some reason in soup it’s okay.

  78. shel Says:

  79. Grammy T. Says:

I’m a pretty big fan of ice cream, but Special K Red Berries is a much more respectable breakfast!

  80. Christine Says:

So many things: pasta, soup, rice and stuff – that picture of broccoli and rice and is-it-tofu-or-chicken? looks delish – but I have to be honest and go with cereal, because that’s what ends up in my bowl once (if not twice) a day, every day. When I was pregnant I think I had cereal three times a day.

  81. bethany Says:

Everything. Truly, well, everything but toast. Cereal, casseroles, soup, stirfry, rice, ice cream, chocolate. I have a favorite bowl too, green pottery, which is mine and no one else is allowed to use it. I shed actual tears when it broke last week, my lovely husband glued it back together, but we all know it’s not the same. Sigh. Pottery, I love thee.

As far as I’m concerned, the best comfort foods come in a bowl. Anytime we can sit down to dinner with just a bowl and a spoon (or fork), dinner is going to be a huge hit at our house.

Our latest favorite is salsa chicken and rice. Chicken cooked in the crock pot with a jar of salsa, rice from the rice cooker, mix in bowl and server. Massive favorite right now, and we had it just last night. :)

  95. Jen Says:

I love eating comfort food in a bowl… Mac & Cheese, Chili and cerea of course! :o)

  108. Heather Says:

Mmmmm… I love cake and ice cream together in a bowl. Or brownies and ice cream, even better! I love the brownie getting all gooey and the ice cream all melty and I can mix it all together and eat it with a spoon!
