Summer Memories…

As part of a share-your-story program for Kellogg’s Love Your Cereal, I’m writing a series of weekly posts about breakfast routines, nutrition and all the million-and-one reasons why we should love cereal!

This week’s topic is: What were your favorite family moments this summer? Did you have any memorable breakfast moments?

Green Bear tags along

This summer has been a doozy. I can’t even believe it’s almost over already. I have to admit it’s taking me a minute to search around my cobwebby brain to find a good memory, let alone a good breakfast memory. Not that we had a terrible summer, it was wonderfully full of life but it did have it’s fair share of challenges, which of course are terribly present in my mind at the moment. Don’t you hate that?

the deck

We did have a really good time at the lake. Breakfasts were usually spent on the deck under the trees, waiting for the sun to make its way over the mountains and through the trees to finally shine on us about ten o’ clock. I’d sit in my chair sketching and drinking a cup of coffee while Bug swung in the hammock or chowed down on a bowl of mini-wheats at the picnic table. I have to admit I miss eating breakfast on that deck. I might have to move a table out to our patio just so I can recreate that outdoor feeling.

More recently we’ve been spending time out with my mom in the sticks. Life has been complete chaos, like it always is out there. It seems every six months my family likes to take their life and up-end it. Why, you ask? I do not know. That’s just the way they are.

This month my mom is moving out of her mobile home and into a studio apartment next door. Moving is fine but she decided to move at the exact time that friends from out of town are visiting. There’s nothing like playing hostess while the furniture is being lifted up and carried out right from underneath you.

Thankfully the friends who are visiting are very flexible and roll with the punches like they were born into this family. Maybe that’s why they are such good friends in the first place.

In the midst of all this crazy moving—with half-packed boxes everywhere and clutter creeping out of closets and taking over every available surface—we have kids who need to eat. For some reason they keep popping up and insisting they’re hungry, and you can’t ignore them no matter how busy you might be. I racked my brain to think of what I could cook in a kitchen that looked like a tornado hit it. Why didn’t I pack snacks?!! I thought to myself.

Just when I thought I’d have to open a can of nearly-expired tomato soup that nobody was going to want to eat, my mom plopped down a box of Frosted Chocolate Mini-Wheats on the table in front of my hungry child. You should have seen my kid’s eyes pop open. Chocolate Mini-Wheats? We didn’t even know they made such a thing. It was like dessert for breakfast and I was fine with that because I knew she was getting a good serving of fiber along with all that chocolate.

mini cereal for mini people

“They just called out to me when I was at the store,” said my mom said with a shrug.

You might think the chocolate mini-wheats called out to her because they taste good but that would be wrong because my mom is one of those weirdos who doesn’t like even chocolate. I know!!! What is wrong with her?

mini wheats

They called out to her because she has three granddaughters and a daughter who love chocolate like nobody’s business. She also knows I love anything mini, even healthy cereal. The fact that it’s wheat-based cereal probably factored into her impuse to buy it, too. If anything, Grandma wants her girls to eat something that is yummy and good for them with lots of fiber.

At the end of the day, I might be perturbed at my mom and her crazy life, or the fact that her organization methods defy logic, and the bad timing in this whole moving thing right when a friend of ours from out of town was visiting…but I can’t ever say she doesn’t love us.

it was good...

It’s just sometimes her love shows up at the most unexpected times. Like breakfast.

The hightlight of my summer was kayaking among the migrating shorebirds in Cape Breton. They didn’t mind my presence at all. I was able to sit quietly among them when my boat beached on their sandbar and get lots of beautiful photographs. ~karen
