The Shresh

Shresh hot or not

When I was a teenager I loved to wear long shirts over leggings. We all did, right? It was the late eighties. I remember my Aunt Knittery particularly did not like this fashion. She’d tease me constantly, asking me if I was wearing a shirt or a dress. In the end she called it a “shresh,” said with a layer of eye-rolling and pity. I didn’t care. I thought I looked cool.

Here it is 2010 and I still like wearing long shirts or “shreshes” over pants. I still love leggings too but they don’t look as cute on me as they did when I weighed eighty-some pounds. I like to wear dresses over my old beat-up jeans. However, my husband thinks this is downright awful. I wish he was here to write a paragraph because he could probably sum it up with two or three scathing sentences that would have you rolling on the ground laughing.

I finally found an embroidered peasant blouse! Except it’s not a blouse. It’s a dress. I really wish it was a blouse. I could shorten it but that would cut off all the really pretty finishing stitches on the bottom. I could probably pull it off wearing it as a dress but it’s kind of short and super see-through. Sometimes I’m self-conscious of my knees. Wearing a slip under it would just ruin all the light-airiness of it. The perfect solution? Wear it over jeans!!!

Except Toby hates it. What do you guys think? Hot or not?

Totally hot! Love it, esp. with the jeans. Husbands don’t know of what they speak, mine included.

I think you look lovely! Now I really want one of those tops! Don’t think I’ll manage to find one in South Africa. :/

I like it! Just warn Toby on days you’re going to wear it that he needs to stretch his eye muscles so they don’t get strained from all that eye-rolling. Or bake him some cookies on the days you wear it, then he’ll associate it with delicious baked goods and stop making wisecracks. ;-)

Try a belt with it, maybe he will like it better that way as it would define your waist more. Second option is get some skinnies or jeggings and wear them under it. they will balance the top.

I LOVE the top! Not so much over jeans. You would look amazing in that top over a pair of leggings!

Nice! It kinda looks like it was born to go with leggings, being see-through like that. Or skinny jeans? Not that I own a pair of either, though that’s just because I haven’t bought an item of clothing since I was pregnant and had to choose between going shopping and going to work in my elastic-waisted pyjamas.

What is it about a dress over pants that makes me feel TALL!?! I’ve got two dresses that I occasionally wear pants with and I love the feel but know that it probably makes me look short and dumpy. But I LOVE IT on you! Go for it! The dress is so pretty nobody’s going to think anything other than – what a cool outfit!

Wear it! My husband is from Holland and the Dutch women wear dresses over pants all the time! I think it’s super practical. I wish I could do it more, but since I’m super short and a little on the round side, it kind of looks ridiculous. But on a tall, thin you, it looks awesome.

i think it looks great! i have been trying to find longer shirts to go with my jeans and i may just start looking for my own shresh!

i love it! but i think that would look really good with a pair of leggings too. you’re so slim, you can totally wear leggings.

That charming dress would look good over a pair of black pants. No particular style in mind, just make ’em black. Keeping it monochromatic would make the embroidery really pop and…black is my favorite wearable color.

I love it, and I agree with others here when I say you would be totally perfect for leggings as well. You have a stunning frame and they would only complement it.

How about “jeggings”. They are leggings that look like jeans. Some are more jean-like than others. Kohls in the juniors section has them and they’re very jean like but stretch like you wouldn’t believe – look like jeans but physics defy these babies. Then there are leggings that look like jeans and have faux pockets and stitching. I have a pair of both and prefer the more jeans look. The leggings that have faux are too faux for me. Also you can’t go wrong with a pair of black leggings, just get a size up so they don’t feel super tight on you.

I think you always look lovely, but you might to consider shortening the dress (keep the hem and reattach!) so that it falls somewhere in tunic territory – it seems a shade long to be paired with jeans. you could also blouse it over a wide belt, to bring the length up a bit. super cute!

  • Auntie Keren

I seem to remember that I do this a few times a week…re-attaching hems, I mean. It’s called specialty hemming and I do it to all the TRUE RELIGEON and DIESEL (etc.) jeans that come into my shop. Something special about that hem!

P.S. I really love it when you recall the knuckle-headed things we said or did when you were growing up. Well, maybe just the nicer times. Especially from your young perspective. It makes it all the more hilarious. Keep it up!

Seriously, you rock anything! Remember some of the crazy stuff we used to run around in? I wish I had more pictures, Toby would eat his words if he knew what the alternatives are :o)

i love it, and i dress like this all the time!!!! it’s very cute and toby doesn’t know what he’s talking about, IMO! love it, wish i had it!

I like the airyness and fun of the shirt, but not so much with these particular jeans. Try skinnies with flats! And I don’t believe you don’t look good in leggings either. I never feel like leggings look good on me either, but I feel a lot better about wearing them when I see plenty of other people my size pulling them off and looking adorable!

  • Kassi

I love it. But I do the same thing…and top it with a denim jacket. very hip-chic and comfortable. wear pearl earrings with it and drive him crazy with three different styles at one time. :o)

I love this look! ( also hides white legs in my case and unshaved legs). I’m a fan of Lucky Brand clothes. Not available in the Uk yet but I buy a pair of jeans whenever I’m in the US. A bit expensive maybe but the denim is so soft and they fit well. Julian and I often disagree on what we think looks good on me. He likes me wearing blouses with collars… bealrgh! I don’t even know where the iron is in my house :)

  • BeachMama

I love it! But, I also think you look cute in a dress so maybe you could balance it off by wearing it as a dress once in a while? Or wear it on days when Toby will be out :)
