Citrus Week Day 1: Lemon scones!
Welcome to Citrus Week! Or maybe I should say week-let because the lemons are already dwindling! Can you believe it? I thought I had so many! We may have gotten a little over-enthusiastic with the juicer. I let Bug try a few and she had so much fun she wouldn’t stop. I know I could have stopped handing her lemon halves but I was having fun too.
Whiiiirrrr! Whirrrrr! Go little juicer go!
The first thing we decided to make were lemon scones. We used this recipe. They were fun to make and delicious!
We zested. Actually, I made a lot of zest.
Just call me Zesty!
And then we made some scone dough. It was very easy! We popped them in the oven and then magically the house began to smell like yummy lemony goodness!
They cooked up perfectly! (Why have I been wasting so much money on coffee shop scones?!! These homemade ones are soooo much better!) Bug made her own mini version which actually turned out pretty good. Hers was just a little crisper, almost like a cookie.
If I had known scones were so easy to make I would have been making them for years! I could whip these things up in half an hour and they are so fresh and tasty! Someday when I have a guest room with a real bed and fresh flowers on the night stand, I will serve these to my guests in the morning.
“Good morning? Can I interest you in a freshly baked scone and a cup of coffee?”
“Why, thank you! Don’t mind if I do!”

I’m drooling, zesty :). Yay for lemon week(let) … we lurve our lemons here, my fridge feels naked without lemons and limes in it.

Yummm, my neighbor just brought a bag of citrus to us last night. Now I know just what to do!

I’m so jealous of you southern types! That totally made my snowy, cold morning-thinking about yummy lemon scones. And Bug is adorable making juice!

That cross-sectional view really tells it: those scones look delicious! The texture looks great. I’d love a cup of coffee, thanks. I don’t fantasize about opening a guest house but you paint a pretty picture of staying in yours when you open.
Bug’s hair really is long! It looks very pretty, but I can’t imagine keeping our punklet’s hair long like that so young, and keeping it brushed. Time will tell I guess.

I love lemons! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
I too noticed how long Bug’s hair is getting! Lovely!

Lemon week looks like a lot of fun! Will you make some savoury lemon stuff?!
Aunt Kathy

Here’s a joke from my school days.
What’s the fastest cake in the world?
Scooooonnnnnne (move head quickly left to right indicating a fast moving object).
Funny huh? No, ok maybe it gets lost in translation :)
Lemon scones sound yummy. I’m glad you found out how quick and easy scones are to make. I’ve never been sure what the difference is between a scone and a rock cake.

Mmmm… looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

Your lemons look like they’re orange. Is that a special variety?
SAJ: You’re right, they do. I think it’s two things. First, they’re Meyer Lemons (I think) so they’re extra sweet like oranges, maybe more orange in color too. And second, the tree is right next to a tangelo tree. I think there is some cross-pollination going on. The tangelos are extra sour!

Those look so yummy! I will have to pick up some lemons, so I can bake along with you guys. :)

Finally de-lurking! I read this post last night, printed the recipe, and promptly made some lemon scones. They are sooooo yummy. I couldn’t believe how easy they were to make and they came out looking and tasting just like the ‘real thing!’ Thanks for giving me an idea for my bag of lemons (I put extra zest and some juice in the dough) and most importantly, for the courage to try making scones! Seriously, what took us so long???

It’s a charmed life you lead, my friend.

So awesome. And the photo of you and Bug looking up at the camera, just gorgeous both of you. I love making scones, but have never even thought of adding lemon, how silly of me!

Mmmmm I think we’ll have to try making some scones.

Ummm. Now I’m hungry – that looked like the best breakfast. Ever.
And way to go, Bug!
