baking soda for shampoo?
Something intriguing…could it be true? Can baking soda and apple cider vinegar replace shampoo and actually be better for your hair? I’m curious. Maybe I’ll have to try this on our camping trip. Spied over at Simple Mom.

Yup! I did that for a summer before getting pg with Elliott. It’s not easy to rinse out, IIRC, but the ACV helps that. The ACV should be used with a light touch I think, so as not to be too oily (then again, my hair has always been oilier than usual so maybe that was just me) I don’t think you dye your hair, but I hear it will strip the dye out if you do.
Um, I think that’s all I remember. I remember liking it, but then it was just too darn much effort once I was pg and tired all the time. And I never got back to it. :)

My hair has never been so soft! I stuck with it for a while but stopped in the end because my hair is so fine and I have a LOT of it so it tended to tangle. Also I couldn’t find the right balance/mix for washing/rinsing.

I’ve tried this too, for a few months, and it worked fine! Like the gals above, I eventually quit though, because I never found a good container system for the baking soda – I got tired of putting some in a little bowl and carrying it to the shower every time. I’m sure if I wasn’t so lazy I could have figured something out. I also admit to kind of missing the suds and aroma of shampoo.
Be sparing with the cider vinegar, and dilute in water, else you’ll smell of eau de pickle afterwards :)

I just finished week 1 of this… I admit that I snuck in a quarter-sized dallop of shampoo in the middle of the week just for some suds and the nice smell but my hair felt like plastic afterwards, so I’m back to the baking soda and vinegar. I can’t stand the smell of the ACV so I’m going to try regular ol’ white vinegar next. I use the peri bottles from having my babies. My hair *is* softer (it’s shoulder-blade length) but what I notice most is that it is much more manageable. My bangs totally found their groove and look awesome now, instead of wanting to fly off of my face.

I tried this and loved it at first but then my hair got sort of yucky and I was too lazy to work with the formula. I still have the bottles in my shower and give myself a supah-rinse every once in a while. It works great for that! And I’m sure it works great for prolonged use if I weren’t such a spoiled quitter. ha!

Hmmm….never tried the baking soda and vinegar, but I do occasionally add a spoonful of baking soda to my very cheap, bargain-brand shampoo to make “clarifying” shampoo. It is GREAT to clean the buildup of styling products.

I’ve been doing it for a year – it takes a bit of a detox period but I love it now! My hair is soft and clean and it is so cheap.
