Spring Break Day 5: The Flower Fields!

Sometimes I wonder if I live to blog or if I blog to live. Sometimes I go places because I know they will be a great blog post. The Carlsbad Flower Fields are definitely one of those places. During Ranuncula season you can’t go wrong visiting the Flower Fields. it doesn’t matter where you point your camera, you’re bound to come back with beautiful pictures that could be postcards to put up on your fridge.

What I didn’t know was that there were so many fun things for kids to do at the Flower Fields. Armstrong Gardens definitely goes out of their way to make the whole experience kid friendly. This is a very good thing for me considering when I told Rapunzel we were going to the flower fields she said, “How Boooor-ring!”

I’m so glad she was wrong. I was kind of worried since the Getty didn’t win her over as much as I’d hoped. I would even wager that the flower fields were probably Rapunzel’s favorite thing that we did during her spring break. That says a lot considering that she’d be happy as a clam if we just went to the beach every day.

As you can see from the pictures, Whoorl came with us. That was fun. We had buggaboo races down the dusty dirt paths and guess what…. Rapunzel got Whoorl to stay and have lunch with us and eat a CHEESEBURGER!!! I know! What can I say, Rapunzel is a charmer.

After Whoorl went home, we went back to the fields and Rapunzel ran all over the grounds getting her “passport” stamped with different destination stamps (IE: lookout point, the rose garden, the sweet pea maze—which was really fun by the way, etc etc…). When you fill up your passport with eight stamps, you get a coupon for a dollar off (the regular price of $2) to mine gems at their little mining company.

Even though the mining is completely fake and they plant the polished gem stones in your bucket of sand, it was a real hoot for Rapunzel. She couldn’t believe her luck when she sifted the sand in the water and ten pretty polished rocks showed up in the grate. When we got home she counted and recounted her gemstones over and over telling me carefully who she was going to give the green one to and the pink one to and which ones were her favorite favorite. It was totally worth the dollar we paid.

The whole trip was worth it. I would definitely recommend it.

It looks like you had a fabulous time. The ranunculus fields are beautiful. The colors are amazing. I hope you were able to bring some home. I’m glad that you had a better day than yesterday.

SAJ says: You know we didn’t buy any flowers. I was so self-conscious about spending too much, I decided not to. Also I used to buy flowers with a resale license when I used to do weddings so it’s hard for me to pay full price now. I do kinda wish I had though… orange ranunculas are my favorite!

hey! I read on the weekends and weekdays and just about every other day in between! ha ha

I’m sorry Baby Bug has a cold and a rash and that you hurt your little red go go car..
I’m glad you all are having a lot of fun on spring break. I miss spring break. My daughter (first grader) had a two day spring break. It seems her private school was going to give the kids holy thursday good friday and easter monday off. But because of the 3 oz of snow they had in January, which they called a snow day for, had to be made up. So there went the holy thursday spring break day.

I think I just wish I was a kid again and doing all the cool stuff that you all are doing. color me green with envy :-)

    have a great weekend!

SAJ says: Two days for Spring Break! What a rip off! I think I’d play hookie. Just kidding…

The fun just don’t stop! Great photos…looks like a good time was had by all. I love seeing Baby Bug standing all on her own. She just looks so tiny and mischievous. :)

Oooh the pictures are all lovely. It looks like so much fun. Wish we could go. I actually looked up the driving directions. 6 hours and 22 minutes away is just too much for a day trip for us. :-D

I want to go there RIGHT NOW. (Actually, I wish I had gone with you guys. You are so much fun!)

And I have to say that your hair looks great long like that.

SAJ says: Next time you’re down visiting, we’ll take you! And a lot of other places too!

Regarding the hair comment, are you sure you’re not mixing me up with Whoorl? Cause she’s the one with the pretty hair. But my hair is getting long. I do agree with you there. :)

Wow, now I know where floweres come from. I always imagined they grew in factories under wierd lights and in fake dirt. Well except the ones in Holland. In the shops they always look so perfect! What an awsome place! Someday if we ever make it down that far south we’ll have to experience that!

I miss spring break. I think that I’m going to go back to school just so I can have one.

We get to watch a niece tomorrow! SAJ, you’ve been an inspiration on places to take her that will be fun and educational. Muchas gracias chica!

I love that you’ve shown us a week in Cali! There appears to be way more that just the ‘tourist’ destinations we Canadians usually flock to…I really appreciate hearing about the adventures…thanks.

Looks like you guys had a fabulous time!

You inspired me to get my lazy behind up and moving this morning and we are headed to the tulip fields. Again, you can’t go wrong as far as getting some great shots goes and I think our 8 month old will really enjoy all the bright beautiful colors, the fields go on for miles.

    Yeah to spring break!

I love al your “trip-reports”. I t always looks so funny in the places you visit. I have never seen such a gorgeus flower field. We don’t have these kind of things here where I live, so it’s a good thing you can show it to us ;)
lots of love from the other side of the planet

You make me want to live somewhere warm, where there are always things to do that don’t include wearing a parka and being careful of the windchill.

Thank you for sharing your Spring Break activities with us. It definately has inspired me to check out some of the fun things around here that I never seem to get enough “time” to check out. If only our winter would finally end so the tulips and dafodils can finally come out to play.

Glad Rapunzel loved it! And it sounds like Whoorl enjoyed it too!

I am so jealous! but anyone in my situation looking at your beautiful pictures of lovely flowers sunning themselves would be jealous since I am sitting here listening to the wind howl as I watch the SNOW come down. yes, SNOW! I can’t believe I used to like snow. I am so over it!!!

I want to bask in the California sun as I stroll through fields and fields of flowers. sigh…

I go by the flower fields about once a week but I had no idea they had fun stuff for kids there. I will have to stop and visit next time I have the kids with me.

It was raining up here in the Pacific North West today (No, really? Rain? In Washington?) and these pictures make me hopeful that spring will get here eventually.

I love Vermont. I wouldn’t live anywhere else in the world (maybe Scotland). However, your pictures of flowers and my window on a mid-spring snowstorm, sure make me wanna move.
