Pop Tart Recipe Challenge
March 30th, 2010This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Kellogg’s® Pop-Tarts® Toaster Pastries.
How do you like your Pop-Tarts? Are you a traditionalist? Do you toast them and eat them at the table with a glass of orange juice and the morning newspaper? Or do you like them raw, right out of their silver wrapper while you pedal off to school in the early morning light? Maybe you’re like me and you eat one toasted and one raw. On special days I like to butter the toasted one and sometimes if the flavor is right, I even dip it in my coffee.
What? Have you tried it? It’s good!
So when Kellogg’s asked me if I could work Strawberry Milkshake Pop-Tarts into my morning routine and blog about it, I had to smile and accept the challenge. Me and Pop-Tarts? We go way back. I’m sure I can figure something out.
First we tried making them into little sandwiches or finger Pop-Tartlets if you will. Some we spread with peanut butter, others we spread with cream cheese and sliced strawberries. They were all pretty tasty, I have to admit.
But the real winner was what I like to call the Pop-Tart Parfait.

I think this really worked because I let the kids make it themselves. It was like a dessert bar for breakfast with full participation.
First, I let them smash the Pop-Tarts into crumbs. That was fun.
Then I set out bowls with various ingredients to spoon into parfait dishes. Since this was breakfast, I tried not to go too crazy with the syrups or sprinkles. There was vanilla pudding (yogurt would be good too), strawberries, blueberries, whipped cream and of course the Strawberry Milkshake Pop-Tart crumbs. Then I let the kids go wild.
They loved it and each created their own unique towering parfait.
It might not be the most creative recipe ever invented using Pop-Tarts in this challenge but it was definitely a morning that will not be forgotten. I think whenever kids can be part of the food-making process it’s always a win. Check out what the other bloggers are making on BlogHer.com’s special offers page. Who knows, maybe one of them will strike your fancy and be something you might even want to try for your morning routine.

I like my pop tarts right out of the package, un-toasted.
April 9th, 2010 at 6:17 pm
They have to be toasted!
April 9th, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Toasted & hot!
April 9th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
straight from the foil, baby!
April 9th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
Mmmm…brown sugar pop-tarts, nice and hot fresh out of the toaster. Delicous!
April 9th, 2010 at 11:33 pm
brown sugar, toasted!!
April 9th, 2010 at 11:33 pm
I like them out of the wrapper, in bed with a big glass of milk. Cinnamon and Sugar, please.
April 9th, 2010 at 11:37 pm
They are the best when microwaved for 12 seconds! Then I eat with coffee with way too much vanilla creamer. So good!
April 9th, 2010 at 11:41 pm
Perhaps I’m too picky, but it all depends! Brown Sugar Pop Tarts just neeeed to be toasted, but I prefer my fruity flavors plain out of the package. Now I’m hungry!
April 9th, 2010 at 11:44 pm
Mine toasted, the girls eat them right out of the package.
April 9th, 2010 at 11:47 pm
Right out of the toaster oven..yum!
April 9th, 2010 at 11:51 pm
I love Strawberry Frosted Pop-Tarts right out of the toaster.
April 10th, 2010 at 12:03 am
If they sold gluten-free pop tarts, I would go to the store, buy some, and make this. MMMM.
April 10th, 2010 at 12:16 am
I like mine toasted with cold milk.
April 10th, 2010 at 12:39 am
I don’t believe I’ve ever eaten a pop-tart. They do exist in Ireland, but I’m a traditionalist where breakfast is concerned and they arrived on the scene too late to disrupt my religious Rice Krispies and Toast routine. But I like Visa gift cards…
April 10th, 2010 at 12:49 am
Toasted! But I had a strange phase in college when I would trek to the only vending machine on campus that stocked brown sugar Pop-Tarts, and eat them right out of the package for my lunch!
April 10th, 2010 at 1:14 am
I think I’m going to try microwaving but I usually just eat them right out of the package.
April 10th, 2010 at 1:38 am
Brown sugar ones right out of the package. But they have to be on sale for me to buy them.
April 10th, 2010 at 2:38 am
Right out of the package. Although one kids has to toast them. We like Strawberry frosted the best….breakfast, lunch or snack.
April 10th, 2010 at 2:38 am
Toasted with a little bit of butter. Yum!
April 10th, 2010 at 2:53 am
My personal favorite is Frosted Blueberry, toasted (with coffee), but my daughter will only eat them toasted under duress as she prefers them fresh from the wrapper. She’ll also only eat one at a time and saves the second Pop Tart for an afterschool snack.
April 10th, 2010 at 2:58 am
Ok, now I want Pop Tarts. :) I prefer mine untoasted – “raw,” if you will.
April 10th, 2010 at 3:11 am
Um, I don’t eat Pop Tarts anymore. When I did it was straight out of the package. Brown Sugar & Cinnamon goodness…
April 10th, 2010 at 3:14 am
Those look fantastic! I’d love to chow on both but unfortunately I’m super allergic to Poptarts. So all I can do is watch others enjoy and drool slightly, or a lot. But I might just have to make the poptart sandwhiches for my girls.
April 10th, 2010 at 3:22 am
toasted! although now I’m thinking they’d make a good cookie base for ice cream sandwiches…
April 10th, 2010 at 3:37 am
I LIKE MY POPTARTS WARMED UP IN THE MICROWAVE JUST UNTIL SOFTENED ABOUT 30 SECONDS.
April 10th, 2010 at 3:50 am
Those parfaits look yummy. I wonder if I showed this to Isabelle she would be willing to try it?
And I’ve only had pop tarts toasted. Never tried them any other way.
April 10th, 2010 at 4:23 am
I like them toasted so the edges get just a bit crisp, but the center still stays soft…it’s an art! I like them straight like that, but my husband likes to add a bit of butter to his.
April 10th, 2010 at 7:08 am
I gotta have mine toasted, with either apple sauce or yogurt and a cup of iced coffee
April 10th, 2010 at 7:24 am
I never eat Pop Tarts for breakfast. I don’t like sweets in the morning.
I always save them for dessert usually straight out of the wrapper, but some flavors are really good frozen.
April 10th, 2010 at 7:45 am
I don’t think I can participate all the way from Finland, but I’ve never had Pop Tarts, and I do wonder what they taste like :p
April 10th, 2010 at 9:30 am
Mmmm, toasted OR raw – both are great!! As long as all the ‘crusts’ are broken off first. :) Yum!
April 10th, 2010 at 11:03 am
I rarely have Pop Tarts, but when I do, they are frozen!
April 10th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Plain, unadulterated strawberry frosted. No question.
April 10th, 2010 at 12:12 pm
I like my poptarts toasted.

I haven’t eaten Pop-Tarts in a while, but when I did, they had to be toasted!
April 10th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Definitely toasted, but not too much…and I love the brown sugar cinnamon kind, mostly because it’s sweet but you don’t feel like you chose the sugariest option!
April 10th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
I LOVE the new grape pop tarts…right out of the package. In my pre-baby days I would take the time to toast them…but now I’ve grown to love them “raw” :)
April 10th, 2010 at 2:53 pm
Toasted. I have to have them toasted. AND they have to be frosted!
April 10th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
I like mine straight out of the package. Also straight out of the toaster. Snuck, so I’m not spotted by my kids, who definitely think pop tarts are only for kids!
April 10th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
I like my pop tarts hot. I love chocolate or cherry flavor.

Strawberry frosted- straight from the foil-usually just one, but some days are just 2 poptart days, you know??
April 10th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
I haven’t had a pop tart in a long time; but I must admit I’ve bought my share of them when my kids were younger and (they) could afford the extra calories.
I like(d) the fruity ones, toasted!
April 10th, 2010 at 11:37 pm
I like my poptart anyway I can get them. Warm on a cold day or just right out the foil…yum!
April 10th, 2010 at 11:59 pm
I like the brown sugar cinnamon ones toasted, and the strawberry ones straight from the wrapper. But brown sugar cinnamon from the wrapper and strawberry toasted is fine too :]

Oh, toasted all the way.
April 11th, 2010 at 6:35 am
Now that I’m pregnant I crave the brown sugar pop tarts, lightly toasted, with milk!
April 11th, 2010 at 8:00 am
brown sugar pop tarts…toasted ~ yum!
April 11th, 2010 at 12:20 pm
I only like the fruity kind of pop tarts- must have frosting on top. I don’t like the ‘I’m-trying-to-pose-as-a-healthy-breakfast-food-frosting-free-crap”.
Toasted just slightly- can’t stand a burnt pop tart. AND with cold milk.
Wow- I never knew I was so specific about how I ate my poptarts!
April 11th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
mmm
April 11th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
Warm, right out of the toaster.
April 11th, 2010 at 6:24 pm
I like mine slightly toasted and always with frosting. Those pop-tartlets with strawberries look amazing too!

My fave is brown sugar cinnamon, unfrosted, and untoasted–great to eat on the run! This was my traditional college breakfast running from the dorms to the first class of the day.
April 12th, 2010 at 12:22 am
My favorite is strawberry, toasted with strawberry jam slathered on top! YUM!
April 12th, 2010 at 1:26 am
Strawberry Poptarts—cold straight out of the box!
April 12th, 2010 at 1:54 am
It depends on the flavor, brown-sugar & Cinnamon – always toasted, strawberry – straight from the backage, blueberry either way :)
April 12th, 2010 at 3:55 am
My favorite Poptart is the Brown Sugar and Cinnamon. I eat them as a late night snack either out of the package or toasted, whichever I’m in the mood for.
April 12th, 2010 at 6:39 am
I like them piping hot. Then I proceed to eat the edges off first, then the divine middle. : )
April 12th, 2010 at 7:23 am

I like the Brown sugar ones warm from the toaster. My youngest, who is the one who favors pop tarts the most, likes his cold, not hot!
April 12th, 2010 at 12:18 pm
When I could eat them, (prior to my Celiac Disese in 2008 ), I loved them toasted through half-way warm. I’d eat the outside edges first then munch on the frosted part in tiny bites to make it last. :)

April 12th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
Sadly, I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a pop tart. Having a sweet tooth, I think I am better off not trying.
