Mustachio!
January 3rd, 2012
“Secret Agent Josephine, you seem to have some hair growing on your upper lip.” What?!! Gasp! How did you know! How could you say such a thing?!! Shocking!
The truth is I do have mustache hair on my upper lip. Not a lot, just a little. But I am a brunette after all, and such things cannot be ignored. Or maybe they could, but a long time ago a friend in high school introduced me to facial bleach, and I have never let a little hair go unnoticed since then.
Part of me wonders how my life might have turned out if she had never shared her dark secret with me.
So what does one do when one is faced with unwanted facial hair? Well, I’ll tell you!
I bleached for years. It was a pain. I hated hiding out in the bathroom while I waited for the chemicals to work. The excuses I’d make when someone would knock wondering why I was taking so long…that was fun. Then there was the burning and skin irritation. It was such a pain.
Speaking of pain, I tried waxing. That was REAL pain. Ugh. I’ve tried it all. Over the years my vanity has taken a backseat to the rest of my life, and I’ve turned to using one of those tiny battery operated nose-hair shavers on my upper lip. It doesn’t do the best job, but it’s quick and efficient, and I don’t have to think about it that much. But no, it doesn’t make me feel very feminine. Honestly? I feel like a man using a razor and I hate it.
So you can imagine my interest when Olay came out with their New Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Duo. I was intrigued.
I’ve been a fan of Olay forever. My mom used Olay all her life, and so have I. I think I started using their face moisturizer when I was thirteen, and I still use it to this day. I’m not a huge multi-step-beauty-routine kinda girl, but this is one product I swear by. It’s gentle, it’s pretty, and it works. Believe me. I live in the desert; if I didn’t use it my face would crack off. I decided I would do this review in photos to show you how easy it really was.
First you apply a thin layer of Skin Guarding Balm. It feels like chapstick.
Then you massage it in for twenty seconds in a circular motion.
Massage, massage, massage…
Now it’s time for the chemicals. I’m skeptical. Will it burn?
Apply a “small grape-sized dollop” of Hair Removal Cream, the directions say. Does this look like a small grape?
Done. Bug stops by to admire…
I set the timer for eight minutes. Eight minutes is kind of a long time. Time for some Groucho Marx impressions.
Hmmm…hmmm…hmmm…so far no burning!
How about we make up a rap while we wait for this mustache-ridder to work?
Yo yo yo! Mustache you gotta go! Drop to the flo and give me fo! Uh…I think I’ll keep my day job.
I’m much better at making faces.
Heh heh heeh heeh heeh..
Finally! I hear a timer ringing!
Wipe it off with a tissue and tah dah! No hair! What? Still ugly you say?
There. Much better with lipstick.
Mwa! Totally kissable. I mean, if I had anyone to kiss that is.
I’m ready for my close-up! Except I’m not very good at taking hand-held close-ups with my 50mm lens.
Here’s my shot. You can’t really tell because my freckles kinda make my face busy but my upper lip is as smooth as a baby’s butt. Trust me.
Or ask Bug. She’ll vouch for me.
And that’s all! I’m happy to report that this Olay product does not dissappoint. Just like my old favorite face moisturizer, I feel fresh and feminine, and it was easy. No mess, no fuss, and best of all, no irritation. I’ll probably use this from now on, and maybe I’ll even pass it on to Bug someday.
So who’s brave enough to admit they have a mustache too? Anyone? Anyone?
Don’t worry I’m not going to make you admit it in the comments, but if you would like to be entered for a chance to win an easy $50 gift card, courtesy of BlogHer and Olay, leave a comment below telling me who your favorite mustachioed character is OR maybe a beauty routine that your mom passed onto you like my mom passed on her love of Olay to me. I’d love to hear your story.

I think it’s sort of weird that the person who told me about Olay isn’t family, friend, or even a female. It was, sort of, my obgyn back when I was pregnant with Lisa. Except, it was more in the form of them handing me a “new mom pack” and it had a big sample of the Olay moisturizer in it. I’ve switched to other stuff over the years, wasted time & money, but I always end up going back to Olay.

I wax mine, and would definitely try something that I can do at home.
Wait, I wasn’t supposed to admit anything. Let’s pretend I just said Groucho.

Being a dark haired girl from a mixed Spanish/Irish heritage…let me just say I’ve been bleaching my whiskers for a LONG time. However, as I get older either the whiskers are getting more stubborn or the product I’ve used forever just doesn’t do the trick as well as it used to. I would definitely try Olay’s product. Also, my mom passed on the value of using moisturizer every single day. It’s been my secret to looking not my age. :) Just those pesky whiskers making me look like an old bearded woman. Okay, I’ll stop now. Thank you!
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:12 pm
Favorite mustachioed character would have to be my dad. One time (when I was very little…) he shaved off his mustache and beard, and I started crying! He’s kept them ever since. :)
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:23 pm
My mom passed on the moisturizing routine to me….It was clinique….which I don’t use, but I do moisturize
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:29 pm
I was raised by my dad, whom offered very little in the way of beauty regimen besides buying me a container of Oxy pads once. To his benefit, they did work rather well on my preteen eruptions.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:36 pm
favorite character is without a doubt my husband … he started growing the handlebars since I was pregnant with my firstborn, who is going to be 10 in 3 months (eek!). See it here.

My mom was a big one on making her own lipstick color by mixing colors. I loved that.

Hmm, Hercule Poirot. ( http://blog.ugroove.tv/event-mustachio-supporting-movember-with-ugroove-face/hercule-poirot-2/ ) It’s such a quirky unforgettable ‘stache!
Also – when I was a kid, my mom was a Mary Kay consultant, so she passed on lots of tips that I still use today when putting on eyeshadow for example. Unfortunately, as a teen, I was only concerned with myself, so helping someone else with different shaped eyes is a mystery to me. But I can do my own!
January 4th, 2012 at 12:35 am
My favorite mustachioed character is my husband, whose goatee sports red, blonde, brown and white hairs. It’s sort of bushy and sometimes menacing-looking, and my youngest stepson actually named it “Deadly Murray.” I love his facial hair, but I hate mine — wild eyebrows, stupid upper lip hair and those pesky little things that like to pop out of my chin. Blargh.

I am an old Olay fan, too. My mom always has bottle (made of pink glass!) of Oil of Olay “beauty fluid” on her dresser growing up…I kinda wish they still made that stuff. Glass bottle and all!
January 4th, 2012 at 5:23 pm
I think my favorite mustache has to belong to Magnum, P.I.
Although I agree with someone else, Poirot is pretty awesome.
January 4th, 2012 at 6:09 pm
James Qwilleran, of the “Cat Who…” series is my favorite mustachioed character.
And my Aunt always had the “Oil of Ol’ Ladies” on her dressing table. It’s been on my counter for many years – not that I’m an ol’ lady!

I can definitely relate with the Olay & my mother always using it! She always had her Olay face moisturizer that she used on a daily basis since I can remember. That’s why I know it’s a product I can count on also! I will admit I’m a brunette & have a mustache that always grows back, & have always used those ouch products! I’ve literally ripped my skin off from using it over the minutes. Not fun! My hubby & daughter always tease me about mine, & it gets embarassing whenever we’re out and they do it! I can’t wait to try the new Olay hair removal! Thanks for sharing!

So my husband is Mexican and can’t grow a moustache to save his life. Now that I’ve hit my 30s, I am apparently doing better in the moustache and goatee growing department. Now I find joy in teasing him about the fact that so many Mexican TV and movie personalities have luscious moustaches and he must not really be Mexican since he can’t grow one! But my two favorite moustached men are Pancho Villa and Vicente Fernandez.
