My mom used to take me and my brother (and usually some other kids who were in our carpool) to A&W on the last day of school for root beer floats.

Every summer we'd visit my aunt & uncle in Minnesota and go swimming at Twin Bear Lake.

Every fall before school started, we would each get a special day out with my mom for lunch and shopping for school supplies and clothes.

When we went to the thrift store, my mom would give us 50 cents or a dollar to buy whatever books we wanted (back then, kids' used books were about 10 cents apiece).

Every New Year's Eve, we have root beer floats and watch a classic movie that's new to us.

We make aebleskiver on Christmas for lunch and usually at least once for breakfast or dinner when we have out-of-town guests.

I love this! My mom worked hard to create traditions in our family, and you're absolutely right: while I may not remember what I got for Christmas the year I was 10, I DO know that in my stocking was a can of Blue Diamond Smokehouse Almonds.

One tradition I've started with my kids is a breakfast out to celebrate the 1st day of summer vacation.

Also, on the night before, or the day of their birthdays, I recount to them the details of the day they were born. It's part of their legacy to know who was there to welcome them, how mommy and daddy felt, and reminds them of how special they are.

Can't wait to hear everyone else's traditions!

I love beets, but I have no idea what to do with them while fresh. Do you peel them? Boil them, then peel? I'm terrified of them. I'm convinced they are little monsters waiting to bite my hand off when I touch them.

What I am going to say is going to sound like blah blah blah...but I was diagnosed with endo after the first birth (I already had my stepdaughter.) I'd always thought there was something wrong with the parts and that I would probably struggle to get preggo. So when it happened really quickly, I was surprised. Then I had her, and not much later, things went downhill. When somone told me endo, I cried in relief. At least I knew what it was. I was put on meds to stop my cycles for 6 months, and told the chances of me ever being preggo again were slim to none. One year later, I was discovering that I was unexpectedly 3 months preggo. The point of this is that I truly believe that if God, or the Universe, or Destiny or whatever want it to happen for you, it will. And sometimes, that is the hardest part.

Don't stress...really, that will make it worse :) Good Luck, and I hope all works out for you.

I never liked beets either because I'd only been exposed to nasty ones from a can. A raw beet (or a home roasted one) can be totally awesome. In this salad, they're not too strong of a flavor, I think jicama might be a good replacement.

Such pretty photos! I'm not even a big salad fan, but these photos (and the ingredients, I must admit) have my mouth watering. :-)
