Bring out the kiddie pool!
June 19th, 2008It was HOT today! Yowzers! I mean, if you call 90-something degrees hot—which we do because we’re pansies. I was sweating and generally feeling sticky and disgusting sitting around in our apartment so we decided to drag out the kiddie pool! Nothing says summer fun more than a kiddie pool on the patio. I love our little Fourth-of-July—inspired kiddie pool.
Of course nothing says summer more than a popsicle in the kiddie pool! In my opinion, the pool is really the only place popsicles should ever be enjoyed because, look, Mom! No drips! But I have thin teeth that are sensitive to cold so fun things like ice cream and popsicles are really a waste on me.
I could go a whole year and never eat a popsicle. I’m the same way with soda. I just don’t really care for it. But there’s that one day when I’m having a big ol’ slice of pepperoni pizza where an ice-cold root beer would just hit the spot. You know what I’m talking about. Same thing with popsicles in the pool.
Too bad we didn’t have any green popsicles. Baby Bug does not share my disinterest in popsicles and has quite a preference for green popsicles. Specifically, the Otter Pops my mom keeps out in her garage freezer. So that face up there? That is because the funny homemade grape juice popsicle was NOT green. She was very skeptical and I ended up eating both hers and mine. Apparently it was “too sour.” Whatever. Those stupid Otter Pops have ruined my child forever.
Just kidding. Otter Pops are great. They are just so…American. Like extra cup holders in Chryslers. Like CD players built into strollers. Did I tell you about that? I don’t think I did. I didn’t blog about the local 5K race (that we did not run because we got there late but instead kicked everyone’s butt in the “fun walk”).
There was a mom with a CD player built into her stroller walking the race with us! She was walking along blasting us all with her music. It was the strangest thing I have ever seen and heard. I can’t remember what song was playing but I’m sure that was worthy of making fun of too. It was just weird to me. Weirdly American.
So anyway!
We had a really great time in the kiddie pool. It cooled us off like a charm. Then we got a little bored of it so we decided to throw the cats in for kicks. We are so evil that way. I totally and one hundred percent blame Toby for this sport we have created over the years. He started it. But I have to admit I found it completely hilarious and entertaining.
I know, I know…the poor cats. But you know what? They sit around in our house all day long doing nothing. They need some excitement in their lives. They need enrichment! And besides Maddy, the spaz cat, totally got us back for our shenanigans.
The other cats yowled and carried on but just jumped out of the pool and ran off to go lick their wounds wet paws. Maddy, on the other hand, stuck out her claws and sliced the side of the pool like a wolverine. Pffffffffffffffffffffffffff! went the pool.
I was prepared to call it a day and throw the pool out. It only cost me nine dollars or so and I figure we’ve got our money’s worth out of it. But Toby, master MacGyver that he is, got out the tape and fixed it. Good as new! So we saved the planet from another big piece of wasted plastic. I have a feeling we’ll be using it all summer.

Hi, this post made me laugh out loud. I haven’t heard you talk about Maddy the Spaz cat for quite a while, how clever of her to get her revenge so neatly. I felt guilty the other day when I kind of accidentally on purpose sprinkled Willow cat with my watering can, when she shoved her nose too close into my plants. She is a demon for eating my seedlings. She doesn’t bare a grudge though and just snuffled and looked at me reproachfully. It’s hot here too and she’s presently sitting in the sink with the tap dripping on her head. Have a great day:)

Now I want to throw our cat in the kiddie pool. Heh.

This sort of reminds me when my parents would blow up my kiddie pool for me and I would go splashing in it. Oh good ol’ childhood summer days…*sigh*

I miss the days of setting up the kiddie pool and waiting for the hose to fill it up, then inviting the neighbourhood kids over.
We never had a cat to toss in the pool though like the mischievous Ponnays!

I love that you put the cats in the pool. They do just lay around all day. I bet that was some serious excitement!

I was going to say, DUCT TAPE, don’t throw it out! Seems like Toby was one step ahead of me.

I don’t care much for popsicles either…but in the summer time….they hit the spot! Your daughter is just so cute! I love her little suit!

I love the kiddie pool. Sometimes I make the girls scoot over so I can get my big but in there too. Or maybe it’s just my feet. Either way, the kiddie pool rocks.
I especially love that you can just dump out the water in those tiny two ring pools and fill it up with clean water the next day. It’s almost like a bath. At least that’s what I tell my girls.
No bath today! We’re swimming!

If summer ever arrives in the NW, I’ll buy another blowup pool. Our’s died last year. The kids love splashing around in it and cooling off. The cats, however, are not big fans and might hold a grudge if we tried to cool them off.

You think 90 is hot?? Drive a couple hours north of LA where it’s currently ONE-HUNDRED-AND-NINE DEGREES. Living in San Fran, I’d forgotten what anything warmer than 80 felt like.

I love kiddie pool days. We had one yesterday but it was only 70 something here. I didn’t get in. Not hot enough.
The popsicle idea is fantastic. I took them out to eat them and then put them back in to wash them after, I will remember for next time…keep them in the pool!
Thanks B!

How on earth did you find a normal kiddie pool? Everyone I come across has a blow up slide or six sprinkler attachments….who needs all that crap?
Old school pools are the best…ahhh…summer…

where, oh where did you get Baby Bug’s swimsuit?
SAJ says: It’s a few seasons old but I got it at Babystyle.

It’s hot here. We stopped at the store and got Fudge Sicles.
60 calories of smooothness…and that’s the regular sugar kind.

What a good idea to eat popsicles in the pool. Because I KNOW we’d get drips everywhere. Except we don’t have a kiddie pool. My honey did however just get some popsicles this morning because somebody was asking and asking for them yesterday.

Was surfing around looking for baby’s first birthday ideas and somehow found your blog. Very cute blog!

How about white grape juice popsicles, colored with green food coloring :)

I love your kiddie pool!!! Is is sad that we never had one for J. We have always had a bigger pool that we had to take him in with us. We do set up the sprinkler though on regular occasions. And the cat in the water it just a little too funny. I would be dunking them too ;).

Didn’t read the other posts, but how abou adding some green food coloring to water and making pops with that? Not sweet, but maybe she will like it….my kids love plain ice. :)

Where did you get the pool?
SAJ says: Ace Hardware, last year. :)
