I’m just a Hick from the Sticks

March 27th, 2006

I apologize if you have a slow connection. I know I’m posting way too many pictures for one post… but the pictures say more than I can. There is something about being out in “the sticks” that will always be “home” to me. I can’t put my finger on it. I love living at the beach but sometimes I miss Hemet. Is it the dry desert air, the endless feeling of summer, my parent’s laid back sloppy style, the cars parked on the lawn, the smell of jasmine and oranges in the sun… maybe it’s the red neck in me but this will always feel like home. Maybe it’s true you can take the girl out of the trailer park but you can’t take the trailer park out of the girl.

Rapunzel and I picked all the lemons off my dad’s runt lemon tree. For only being about a two feet tall it sure produced a lot of lemons. I think it cross pollenated with another citrus nearby and that might be why the fruit looks a bit orange.

I’m officially on a lemonade kick right now. Rapunzel really really wanted to set up a lemonade stand but we just didn’t get it together. She made some excellent signs though.

We enjoyed the fruits of our labors and had lunch outside. I sat in the sun with baby bug and Rapunzel made me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Now that’s service. Who needs to go to a spa when you can just go home and get waited on hand and foot?

After some serious R and R, we loaded up my mom’s car with all my laundry and headed back home to the beach. Yes, I do feel about a thousand percent better.

I’m so glad that you got to relax at your Mom’s. What a treat to get waited on! I bet that was great. I love the pictures too. Families are wonderful huh?

Sounds like an awesome time. I can smell the jasmine and the lemonade from here, your pictures are worth more than a thousand words. No matter where you move to home will always be home and Mom will always spoil her little girl. Glad you are rested and renewed!

i love the sound of desert air, and the smell of jasmine and oranges in the sun.. made me feel all cozy. The city doesn’t offer much of any of those! i enjoy reading, Elena

Claim who you are and stick to it! Love it that you’ve got hick-in-the-stick history. I’ve got a bit of that, myself. And I’m proud of it. Only around here, the home fare is butterbeans and cornbread. Not homemade lemonaide. Is her name really Rapunzel?

No. We give all the kids nicknames on this site… Mostly ’cause I feel so guilty for exploiting their cutness all the time. At least they can be sort of anonymous.

Sounds like this was just what you needed!

I’m SO jealous. Just looking at the pictures is enough to make me wish I was there. It’s like you can smell the Jasmine and the lemonade….and then to top it off you get to drive back to the BEACH!!!

Ahhhh I miss the smell of the ocean :)
Glad you got some much needed R & R. :)

Those look like lemoranges to me. I’m glad you live close enough to “home” to be able to be rescued for laundry and R&R.

My mom and dad are very similar to yours…..something about going home.

    I’m glad you’re doing better.

Now I want some Lemonade…. I am glad you did all your laundry but I am sure you can find a laundormat near home.

  11. Steph Says:

I’m so glad that you were able to take a rest and get all the darn laundry done. How far is hemet from the beach?

    LOVE all the photos!!!

  12. josephine Says:

about an hour and a half if there’s no traffic. three hours if there is.

Welcome back. I’m glad you are feeling better. We all need to get away from time to time. Please email me your moms address so I can sit in her garden and drink lemonade and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches too. It looked so relaxing!

we just returned from a long weekend with my mom in a different desert: Arizona. While I don’t miss the oppressive heat and prefer living 2 minutes from the beach, I also sometimes yen for the relative comforts of my desert home. . . . Oh, and lemonade is never a bad idea!

There’s nothing wrong with, nor need to apologize for your roots and connection to “the sticks”. I believe it is this connection that makes (and keeps) you who you are. You remain that fun, creative, unpretentious person we all love. Surrounded by a wealthy beach community with so many “cheek kiss-cheek kiss-plastic-shallow people”, you continue to keep it real. Let’s hear it for “the sticks”!

If your mom ever wants to part with her hand-juicer machine…. I WANT IT! You just can’t find those things anywhere anymore.

  17. Marissa Says:

So how long did it take you to do all that laundry anyways? I hope you got help folding all that stuff :)

  18. josephine Says:

I don’t know… I just kept doing it all day and all night. It’s so nice to be able to pop a load in and then go outside and do something else. It’s so nice to be able to hand the fussing baby over to Auntie Heather and get a breather. Now that I’m home and the baby is attached to me like a parasite, I’m missing those extra arms!

  19. Karina Says:

Looks like you had a fun and relaxing weekend!! Glad you’re feeling better!!

  20. Kristin Says:

You made me want lemonade, blossoms and my mom with this post.

Am so glad you’re feeling better.

I am so glad you were able to take a break and get refreshed and have your family wait on you hand and foot. It sounded like you really needed it. I can’t imagine living without laundry facilities. I can’t believe how much dirty laundry the little munchins produce.
